ELFMAN GOES"ANYWHERE BUT HERE" WITH TORI AMOS On January 5, 1999, Sonicnet Music News Of The World reported that a new Tori song will be part of the soundtrack for the movie "Anywhere But Here." No details about the song were given. The soundtrack is due to be released in the U.S on April 6 and the movie, which stars Susan Sarandon, is due in theaters April 23. In particular, the article says the soundtrack "will feature new songs from a slew of big name female singer/songwriters, including Jewel, Tori Amos, Shawn Colvin and Poe. The soundtrack, due April 6, also will feature a score composed by ex-Oingo Boingo leader Danny Elfman. According to a source at Atlantic Records, Elfman also is expected to collaborate with the singers on a few of the original songs." Apparently the soundtrack will also have contributions from Bad Religion, Belvedere, Fountains of Wayne and the Cars. TRAVOLTA STARRER TOPS B.O. WITH HELP FROM THE ELFMANJohn Travolta's starrer A CIVIL ACTION from Touchstone Pictures opened up at the top of the box office it's opening weekend with almost $15 million in receipts. I saw A CIVIL ACTION on 01/07/99 and thought the film had it's high points. I enjoyed the structure of the editing, the toned down cinematography (one scene looks like it's Robert Duvall's head floating in darkness. I like that!) and of course Danny Elfman's score. It's another non-thematic effort - just like GOOD WILL HUNTING, and A SIMPLE PLAN. While this approach is subdued and right for the film, it makes me yearn for the days when themes and melodies were a major part of Danny Elfman's repetoire. A CIVIL ACTION is based on bass guitar, scattered piano tinkling, light choir and what I believe was an organ(!). This is a new and fresh element. Most cues are light and soft - there is no "Main Title" cue unfortunately. The film's credits run with a song. There are two stand out moments - both involve a soaring choir (the second more especially with an aerial shot of Boston and Fenway Park almost at the end of the film. I was blown away). With A CIVIL ACTION, once again the film has been served highly by the score. But as a major fan, I feel a bit disrupted. It's greedy I know to want something from a composer and I'm sure I'll take some major flack for it, but still I would have hoped for something I could hold onto, something I could take away from the film music wise. RICHARD ELFMAN'S LOUNGE Richard Elfman, brother of Danny Elfman and director of FORBIDDEN ZONE and SHRUNKEN HEADS as well as the upcoming REVENANT A.K.A MODERN VAMPIRES now has an official site...Address, you guessed it, www.richardelfman.com. Among the interesting info is news that his latest production will feature "music by Danny Elfman". It's called THE DINGUS and is labelled as a "hipster/comedy fantasy" film...Thanks to Vincius...
